The Masterplan Coastal Safety is a project of the Flemish Government to protect our coast from flooding until 2050. Weak links in the coastal defences will be strengthened so that everywhere at least a level of protection against a super storm with a 1000-year return period is achieved. FHR provides support, on the one hand, technical control of the design and on the other hand, quantifying the reduction of flood risks thanks to reinforcement measures. The research is carried out using a set of mathematical and physical models that simulate super storm conditions and takes into account the following processes:
• storm surges, storm waves
• Beach and dune erosion
• wave overtoping
• breaching
• flooding
• damage and casualties
