The Royers lock connects the river Scheldt to the right bank of the port of Antwerp. The actual lock has a length of 180 m and a width of 22 m. It is the aim of the division Maritime Access to enlarge the Royers lock by lengthening the lock towards the river to achieve a length of 250 m and to symmetrically widen the lock to a width of 36 m. This adaptations reduces the length of the outer harbour to app. 300 m.
On behalf of the division Maritime Access, FH performed real-time simulations in order to assess whether the stopping distance in the outer harbour was acceptable, and to assist the design of guiding constructions. The design vessel was a ECMT class VIb push convoy with a total length of 191 m and a beam of 22.8 m (four barges).
