In the Hedwige-Prosperpolder, on the border between the Netherlands and Flanders, a new ring dyke will be constructed in the coming years by the Zeeschelde-Zeekanaal (dVW) division as part of the updated Sigma Plan, replacing the current Scheldt dyke.
During the construction phase, a unique Living Lab, Living Lab Hedwige-Prosperpolder (LL HPP), will be created. During the works, dyke strength tests (wave overtopping, overflow, etc.) will be carried out. Ultimately, the aim is to load the current Scheldt dyke until a breach is formed. In parallel, large-scale crisis exercises will be conducted to practise preventing, deliberately causing and repairing breaches (known as management and emergency measures).
STOWA and Flanders Hydraulics are joining forces to facilitate dyke strength tests and crisis exercises within LL HPP. Together with other key figures, the tests will be designed and implemented. The first cherry on the cake of this collaboration is the approval of the EU-INTERREG 2 Seas project POLDER2C's with STOWA, Xperta (DMOW), ULille, TUDelft, ISL (FR), EA (UK), SWW (UK), RWS, Cerema, KULeuven (Bruges), the Ministry of Defence (NL), the province of Zeeland and Zeeland University of Applied Sciences as partners.
Kick-off: 22-24/01/2020
