The wave basin is mainly used for research regarding ports and coastal safety.
Use
3D scale models can be built and tested in the wave basin.
For ports, the following tests can be carried out:
• 3D stability of breakwaters and breakwater heads;
• wave agitation in ports.
For research in the context of coastal safety; the following tests can be performed:
• wave run-up and wave overtopping on (sea) dykes and quay walls;
• water pressure and wave forces on structures.
Flanders Hydraulics’ wave basin is equipped to the current international standards including a multidirectional wave generator. Both long-crested oblique waves and short-crested waves (several waves from different directions mixed together) can be generated. The wave basin also features an active wave absorption system to ensure that waves in the wave basin are not reflected by the wave generator. This guaranties realistic and accurate wave simulation in the physical model.
