Bruges has a strong maritime connection. From the 13th to 15th century, trading hub between the Hanseatic cities of the far North, England and Germany, and the main trading centres in France, Spain and Italy. Exotic products, precious stones and pigments, spices and expensive goods coming from all corners of the world were traded in Bruges. The city showcased its wealth with its majestic belfry (13th century), its Saint John’s Hospital, churches and chapels and its prestigious city hall (14th century).
Nowadays, the port of Zeebrugge is an important multifaceted port that handles a wide range of trades.
